The debate over which rappers are the greatest have long been argued about in barbershops, clubs and wherever hip hop heads and intellectuals gather. You may have heard that Billboard recently put out a list of the “Top 10 Rappers of All Time” that have many people in an uproar based on the content of the list.
When I seen the list for the first time I thought it was some kind of mistake or maybe a bad joke. Now don’t get wrong some of the artist on that list should definitely be there.
I mean Eminem, Jay Z, and Rakim surely deserve their place on the list. Some of the others on the list well not so much in my opinion. The controversy of Billboard’s top 10 rappers of all time is not who is on the list but more so who’s not on the list.
How do you have a list of the best rappers and not have Tupac on the list? Tupac’s music rocked many parties and venues and still to this day you can hear his music being bumped in the streets. How about the pioneers of the rap game?
You know those like Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, and Curtis Blow that put rap on the map when hip hop was in it’s infancy. Surely these guys deserve to be on any list claiming the best of all time in the rap game.
Many people in the industry are voicing their opinions around the about their disappointment with the list. Here’s what Snoop Dogg had to say: “This is so disrespectful.!! Whoever did this list need a swift kick in the Ass,” the rapper wrote in an Instagram caption with a picture of the list “No. Tupac. Come on cuz.” A number of Twitter users shared Snoop Dogg’s sentiments on their social media accounts as well.
Knowing the list would incite reactions, Billboard made sure to specify they ranked “Rappers and not Rap Artist,” (Not really sure what the difference there is) which was why Dr. Dre and Kanye West didn’t make the list. Anyway here is the list below, read it and judge for yourself.
10. Lil Wayne
9. Kendrick Lamar
8. Ghostface Killah
7. Lauryn Hill
6. Andre 3000
2. Jay Z
1. Notorious B.I.G.
